The Badminton section has been in place since 1952. It involves officers and staff from all over the UK.
As you know the UK and Northern Ireland is split into 12 Regions for Police Sport UK purposes. Each Region will hold a qualifying tournament to allow the best players to compete at the national championships. Due to the nature of the sport the section encompasses all age groups from the elite to the vets and even the supervets. All three disciplines are played for at the national championships in all age categories (apart from singles). The championship venues move from area to area each year, the matches are always keenly fought for, but in good spirit. The section actively encourages new participants and makes everyone feel welcome.
Last years championships were hosted by Thames Valley Police in April 2009. In 2010 the Championships will be held in Aberdeen once again in April.
The national team consists of approximately 6 ladies and 6 men. We play very competitive matches against an England under 18 team, British universities, Ireland under 21 and Scotland under 19. Due to the fact that badminton is not a USPE event we take part in a bi-annual tournament with teams from Denmark, Holland and Ireland.
