A 10 mile road race championship was introduced in 1972 with West Yorkshire hosting the first event at Wakefield. It is a team event as well as an individuals competition. It is usually held in September. At first only male officers took part but in 1980 the first lady competed in the championships. In 1994 a ladies team event was added to the event and also a Minor forces (Less than 2000 authorized police officers) was added to the competition. It is common have over 400 runners taking part in the competition each year. There are no representative fixtures and it is not a USPE event.
