The Police Sport UK Squash Section was formed in 1972 and the first National Championships were hosted by Warwickshire. Each Force in the UK is entitled to hold a ‘Force Championships’ event and send the finalists in each category (Men, Ladies and Veterans – Over 45) to a ‘Regional Eliminator’. This event should be organised by the Regional Representative on the Police Sport UK Squash Section Committee and should, where practicable, be hosted by each of the Forces within that Region on a rotational basis. As with the ‘Force’ event, the finalists in each of the categories qualify for the National Championships. The Squash Section tries to ensure that the National Championships are hosted by as many different Forces as possible (bearing in mind access to Squash Clubs of suitable size etc) and over the years they have been held in places as far flung as Aberdeen, Belfast, Brighton and Exeter.
In addition to the National Championships, The Squash Section participates in an annual Quadrangular Tournament plus two separate ‘Representative Matches’. The Quadrangular Tournament has been running for over twenty years and originally comprised of Police, Fire Service, Army and Navy. Due to the Royal Navy experiencing problems in raising a team, the event was modified in 1999 to have a ‘Combined Services Team (Army, Navy and RAF) and to include the Civil Service as a new member. The event is more often than not held in Nottingham, due to its central location and the number/quality of courts available for matches. 2005 saw another modification when a Ladies competition was introduced for the first time. Pleasingly, the Police Sport UK Ladies Squash Team has won the event each year since.
The Representative Team Matches for men, ladies and veterans are generally held in February and October of each year and, again, the Squash Section tries to take these around the country. In recent years, however, it has become increasingly difficult to find clubs with either sufficient court space or a suitable standard of player to provide competitive matches and so the events have tended to be restricted to a relatively small group of clubs throughout the country.
The Squash Section is not part of USPE.
The Squash Section is always keen to see new members and anyone wishing to participate or just find out more about the Section should contact either the Regional Representative (as listed on the Police Sport UK web site) or the National Secretary, Jim Hay (jim@fitnessjim.com).
