At the first Athletic championships in 1928, two Tug - of - War championships were held at Liverpool. One at 104 Stone now 660 kg and in 1990 increased to its present weight at 680kg. Also on that day a Catchweight competition was held. In 1991 a 640 kg competition was introduced and in 2001 a 720kg competition was also added. So at present there are teams for eight competitions at 640kg, 680 kg, 720kg and Catcheight. Teams for the competitions can be made up of both male and female personnel. It is a none USPE Sport, although the last time this event was held in the Olympic Games in 1928 it was won by a team from the 'City of London' police and the medal can be seen in the museum at Wood Street Police Station. There is one representative fixture against the combined services usually held around July.
