The first Cross Country Championships were hosted at Cheltenham in 1952,and was only contested by male officers. In 1981 a ladies event was added to the championship and in 1992 a minor forces competition was added (A minor force is a Constabulary with an authorized establishment of under 2000 'Police Officers'). These championships are usually held in February/March each year.

The section takes part in two representative fixtures, one in November against the Prison Service and the Fire Service and the other in January at RAF Halton against several military establishments and county teams. Any officer may take part in the championships without qualification and teams for the representative fixtures are selected from the championships on known form at the time of the event. This event is well supported with over 400 competitors taking part from the young recruit to retired personnel.

Every four years Police Sport UK send both a male and female team to the USPE Championships with selection usually being made immediately after the that years championships.
